City of London’s first independent hospital opens its door

A new hospital has opened in the City of London, providing specialist cardiac, cancer, orthopaedic, and women’s health services for private patients.

Nuffield Health at St Bartholomew’s Hospital has been built in collaboration with Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs St Bartholomew’s Hospital, a leading NHS specialist heart and cancer centre.

Located in the grounds of the NHS facility, the Nuffield Health hospital will share consultants and any surpluses generated from private patient activity will be invested back into NHS services.

The £70m development was designed by architects, Scott Tallon Walker, and involved the remodelling and refurbishment of two iconic buildings on the hospital site – the old pathology building and the residential staff quarters.

The hospital has 55 inpatient beds in total split over the two buildings, supported by an oncology day unit, seven intensive care beds, four advanced operating theatres, and a wide range of diagnostic and physiotherapy services, including 26 consultation rooms.

The latest technology

And diagnostic services include an imaging suite equipped with a next-generation Siemens MAGNETOM Sola 1.5T MRI system with BioMatrix Technology, which automatically adjusts for each patient to give greater precision and better diagnosis.

The hospital will be part of a new health and wellbeing campus, with patients having access to the recently-opened Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Centre in Barbican, which provides rehabilitation and rehabilitation support as well as mental wellbeing services.

The charity will also run free-to-access community clinics from the campus, including joint pain and COVID-19 rehabilitation programmes.

As well as benefitting patients, the hospital will also support staff, with operating theatres featuring live streaming capabilities, providing world-class training opportunities and clinical knowledge sharing.

Modernising the estate

Jonathan Canham, business development director and interim hospital director at the new facility, said: “We are delighted to open the doors to our new hospital, the first and only independent hospital in the City of London community.

“Nuffield Health’s 37th hospital in the UK, it complements the internationally-leading cardiac care delivered at the neighbouring St Bartholomew’s Hospital and our private patients will have access to many of the UK's leading consultants within cardiac, cancer, orthopaedics, and women’s healthcare.”

Dame Alwen Williams, Barts Health NHS Trust group chief executive, added: “Our partnership with Nuffield Health has breathed new life into our historic buildings, while surpluses generated from private patient activity will be invested back into NHS services, benefiting patients across east London.”
