MEDIAN Group, the leading European provider of mental health and rehabilitation services, has completed the first phase of an £11 million green investment programme in the UK – as part of a group-wide commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction.
The first installation of solar panels took place on 18 April 2024 at Priory Hospital
Barnt Green in Birmingham and will prevent 14 tonnes of carbon being emitted at
the site each year.
It is part of a wider MEDIAN Group programme to install solar panels across 119 locations in
Germany, the UK and Spain, ultimately generating an estimated 13,000 mWh of photovoltaic
energy, following an investment of €21,4 million euros.
MEDIAN Group COO and interim CFO, Philipp Schulte-Noelle, said: 'Investing in renewable
energy infrastructure is a transformational step in our journey towards even greater energy
efficiency. It underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship and contributing
positively to the communities we serve.
'Adopting solar energy not only reduces our emissions, but enables us to reduce our energy
costs and allocate more resources towards patient care, as well as supporting us to future-
proof our facilities.'
All solar panels planned for installation across the group are manufactured using state-of-the
art, highly durable materials with a warranty of over 30 years. At Hestia in Spain, solar panels
have already been installed at facilities in Barcelona.
Other green initiatives taking place across MEDIAN Group include replacing boilers with
energy-efficient solutions, including air source heat pumps, and using block-type thermal
power stations to supplement heating systems. It has also introduced electric cars for patient transport and installed LED lighting.
Photovoltaic panels, commonly known as solar panels, harness solar energy to generate
electricity. By utilising renewable energy sources, MEDIAN Group aims to minimise its reliance
on traditional energy.
