Kier to provide facilities management for Velindre

Kier, as part of the ACORN consortium, has secured the contract to provide facilities management services for the upcoming Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, scheduled to be completed in 2027.

The contract, spanning 25 years from April 2027, encompasses a wide range of services including mechanical and electrical maintenance, building fabric maintenance, fire systems management, energy efficiency, digital management, and health and safety provision. Kier Places, a division of Kier specialising in workplace, residential and building solutions across the UK, will oversee the delivery of these services.

The Velindre Cancer Centre, a pivotal healthcare institution in Wales, is undergoing significant expansion as part of the Velindre University NHS Trust’s Transforming Cancer Services in South East Wales Programme. Procured under the Welsh Government Mutual Investment Model, the new facility aims to offer high-quality, sustainable care to a greater number of cancer patients while advancing cancer treatment through education, research and innovation.

Paul Jones, operations director for Kier Places said: ‘The Velindre Cancer Centre is already a vital healthcare facility in Wales. To be part of the consortium which is developing a new state-of-the-art facility to extend these services to even more cancer patients, and with such a focus on innovation and environmental impact, is a real privilege and we’re delighted to be on board.’

The hospital is designed to meet BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards and will operate as an all-electric facility, prioritising energy efficiency and minimising operational carbon emissions.

The ACORN consortium, selected through a rigorous public procurement process led by Velindre University NHS Trust, comprises a diverse array of organisations including Sacyr, Abrdn, Kajima Partnerships, and various other partners specialising in architecture, engineering, legal services and project management.
