Nobi Smart Lamps are fitted into residents' rooms at Hartland House care facility, helping to reduce falls and improve outcomes
The organisation
Hartland House, part of The Abbeyfield Group, is an upscale, 31-bedroom residential living facility in Milnthorpe, Cumbria, which cares for people over the age of 65, including those with dementia.
Offering a home-from-home environment, residents not only have their own bedrooms, but also benefit from a scenic conservatory and three furnished lounges where activities take place.
The challenge
Falls can be catastrophic for older adults and are the leading cause of hospital admissions in Cumbria, placing pressure on both care staff and the NHS.
According to statistics, 25% of falls result in hospitalisation, with 20% categorized as ‘long-lie falls’.
Regarding the latter, 50% of older individuals who remain on the floor for over one hour after a fall die within six months.
So prompt assistance following a fall is crucial, not only for preserving quality of life, but also for significantly reducing hospital stays and alleviating the burden on care staff.
The solution
Already known for its diligent fall data collection and reporting, Hartland House was selected by the local Integrated Care Board (ICB) for a pilot project using new Artificial-Intelligence-based technology to improve fall prevention and detection inside the facility.
Combining state-of-the-art AI with smartsensor technology, the Nobi Smart Lamp was seamlessly integrated into the Hartland House infrastructure, including lamp placements in eight residents’ rooms to ensure real-time fall detection and fast response without compromising comfort or privacy.
The system’s ability to detect falls and alert our care staff immediately has significantly reduced response time, ensuring our residents receive prompt assistance when they need it most
The Nobi Smart Lamp is 100% effective, capturing every fall incident with accuracy.
And prolonged waits for help are eliminated as the lamp triggers and alarm within 30 seconds of a fall, with help arriving in an average time period of 92 seconds.
In addition, once integrated with smart devices and digital patient records, Nobi can automate administration of patient data, saving time for care staff.
It also makes it possible to eliminate the need for nightly surveillance rounds, freeing up time for more-meaningful tasks and reducing disturbances to residents’ sleep.
The feedback
The implementation of the Nobi Smart Lamp at Hartland House has resulted in significant positive outcomes.
With its 100%-effective fall detection, swift response time, and
Pro-active fall prevention measures, Nobi provides residents with a renewed sense of security, peace of mind to families, time savings for staff, and higher job satisfaction.
Moreover, its non-intrusive design and user-friendly interface have seamlessly integrated technology into the care environment, eliminating stigma and promoting a more-dignified aging experience.
